Rare opportunity to own a historic mansion in Society Hill! For the first time in many years, the Cadwalader House provides an individual the opportunity to restore this property to its original splendor, while creating a custom home. The house spans five stories plus a basement (2091 SF, not included in square footage)and features a large private outdoor space. There is approval for two parking spots on the property. The Cadwalader House was built in 1829 by Joseph Norris. It was constructed on what was originally the side garden of the Shippen-Wistar House, another historic mansion along "Surgeons' Row". Starting in 1837, the house's namesake, Judge John Cadwalader, had his legal office and residence here, thus creating an unusual fa~ade with two double doors?one to the office, the other to the residence. Judge Cadwalader was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and had a prestigious legal career. He served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives as a member of the Know-Nothing movement. Judge Cadwalader later became a United States District Court judge for the Eastern Region of Pennsylvania, appointed by his good friend President James Buchanan. In 1913, the Cadwalader House was combined with the adjacent Shippen-Wistar House and restored by architects Stewardson and Page, becoming the home of the Mutual Assurance Company.
